Greetings Community Partners,
On November 17, 2020, Halifax Community College TRiO Student Support Services will host
guest speaker Dr. Siobahn Day. This event will be held virtually via zoom from 3pm-4pm. Dr.
Day is a 3 x HBCU graduate and female scientist. Siobahn received her BS in Computer Science
from Winston-Salem State University in 2005, her master's degree in Information Science from North Carolina Central University in 2009, and in 2018 obtained her master's and doctorate of philosophy degree in Computer Science from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. Siobahn is the first female Computer Science Ph.D. graduate from the university. Dr. Day recently made headlines for receiving a grant to collaborate on the research for self-driving vehicles.
Access to higher quality education in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics
(STEM) has been distributed in an alarmingly uneven way. As a result of this, so many of our
students lack access to rigorous and engaging math and science courses. To improve the
situation at hand, and close the gap in access, it’s important that those involved in education
work to expand and scale proven educational programs such as this one. It is my hope that
teachers can find a way to incorporate this program as part of a lesson as I am opening this
virtual presentation up to surrounding local high and middle school students. Dr. Day will be
doing STEM demonstrations, taking us on her journey to becoming a scientist, and engaging the
students in a Kahoot game where they can win prizes.
We think this presentation is beneficial and a great opportunity to share with the community. If
you have any students interested in STEM, please allow them this wonderful opportunity. For
more information, contact Ms. Sonya Robinson, [email protected].
Sincerely,
Dr. Sherida Gholston
