* From Your Principal

 Greetings Families:

I hope you and your family had a good Memorial Day Holiday. I would like to remind you that there are less than five days before End of Course Testing. Our students and teachers are reviewing important materials as well as revisiting effective test taking strategies. This week we had the privilege of witnessing magic at its best when were treated to a magic show by Mr. Houdini. Mr. Houdini is known throughout the east coast for his entertainment. He has participated in functions and performed for such persons as Spike Lee, Vivica Fox, Magic Johnson, Al Sharpton, and a host of others. Our students enjoyed the show. His message included giving your best. Please emphasize to your child to give his or her best performance on End of Course Testing next week. In addition, please make sure your child receives plenty of rest and eats a nutritious breakfast daily.

This week, our seniors will be participating in Decision Day activities to celebrate college acceptance at Northampton West High. We are proud of our seniors that are college ready. Also, the Senior Awards Banquet will be Wednesday night at 6 p.m. in the cafeteria. Thursday night at 6 p.m. in the cafeteria, our PTA will hold their final meeting of the year. During this time, any parent that would like to seek a leadership position in the PTA  for next year, will be able to submit his or her name.

As always have a great week and feel free to visit or call our school at any time. Charger Pride!

Most Sincerely,

William C. Dixon Jr., ABD

Baccalaureate Scenes

The Baccalaureate Service is believed to have originated at Oxford University in 1432 when each bachelor was required to deliver a sermon in Latin as part of his academic exercise. Since the earliest universities in this country were founded primarily to educate ministers, the British practice of the Baccalaureate Service was continued.

The service is held within a few days of the graduation and/or commencement ceremony, often on the Sunday or Wednesday night immediately preceding graduation. At some colleges and universities they are held directly before the graduation. Speakers selected tend to be respected community leaders, faculty members (often selected by the graduating class), students, or local religious leaders. These speeches are often intermixed with musical performances, drama, and worship. Baccalaureate addresses can range in length from under half an hour to as long as four hours.

Because of Supreme Court rulings regarding the separation of church and state, baccalaureate services are not officially school-sponsored events at public schools. However, many have student-initiated services, fully permitted under law.

A special "Thank You" is extended to our former principal, Mr. Corey Moore, for initiating our first baccalaureate service  two years ago after its absence for many years at Weldon High and the former Ralph J. Bunche High School.   Our graduating classes and community commends his efforts.

URGENT NOTICE: Swine Flu Information

Dear Members of the Weldon City Schools Community,

The State of North Carolina has entered a heightened surveillance stage resulting from the presence of a swine flu virus that is making people sick in several states, and also in Mexico.

Although, to date, mostly mild illness has occurred in the United States, we realize that many people are worried and we would like to address your concerns.

We believe students can safely attend classes and schools will remain open at this time. Individual schools might have to close if students or staff are diagnosed with swine flu.

For more information please review the attached document: Swine Flu Information.doc.

Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our children and our schools healthy.
